Here is the Igbo traditional wedding attire (Igba nkwu attire). Traditional weddings are one of the most popular types of marriage ceremonies in most tribes in Nigeria, including the Igbo. Brides and grooms spend a lot of time searching for the best traditional wedding attire and costumes for their special day. It’s a good idea to start considering some colors and styles even before getting married. That’s why we have made a great effort to help you choose the best attire, whether you are a bride or groom. While you are busy checking out the best outfit for your day, also consider the color of your Asoebi for both the men and the ladies.
Color Combination for Traditional Weddings and Costumes
Your choice of color is one factor that will determine how your celebration environment will look, so you need to be careful when making this decision. Remember that whatever color you choose should match perfectly with your partner’s choice. This year, we have discovered that men are increasingly falling in love with the color “white” and a touch of their partner’s chosen color, while the ladies are opting for their preferred colors.
For your day, you are meant to appear in two attires, 1st traditional wedding outing attire for welcoming/greeting your visitors, 2nd traditional wedding outing attire for the occasion proper and you will see all of them here.
1st Traditional Wedding Outing Attire
As the name implies, this is your first attire. For the bride, you can choose to sew a skirt and blouse, a gown, or even tie a wrapper to your chest with either lace material, George, or other types of wax prints. The bride will need to wear a neck bead, hand beads, and have her hair adorned with beads, preferably coral beads, and hold a fancy tail or hand fan. The groom, on his part, can choose to wear a piece of wrapper, preferably George or any other material, along with neck and hand beads, a walking stick, a cap, and a hand fan to match.
2nd Traditional Wedding Outing Attire
This is where you need to put in more effort to look gorgeous. Personally, I would advise the bride to go for a two-piece wrapper, either George, Lace, or Wax prints in rare cases. Still, the choice is yours because it is your day. Choose a color that is vibrant and select the right style for it. The groom can choose from Agbada, Kaftan, or Senator style. His choice of color may not be exactly the same as the bride’s but it should complement it. The bride should wear her Gele headwrap, while the groom should wear his cap with other matching accessories, as seen in the pictures below.
