There is a growing trend in society that is of great concern. We are facing a trend where some women prefer not to wear a bra. Recently, I was intrigued to question a teenager who was comfortably wearing her crop top braless about why she prefers to do so. Her response surprised me. She said, “It is my choice because I don’t see the need. They say bras offer more support to the breasts, but as you can see, my breasts don’t need that support. I feel more comfortable not wearing a bra because it inconveniences me. When I’m not wearing a bra, I feel so free. I don’t see the need, honestly. One thing I do is that I know how to choose the right outfit without drawing unnecessary attention to my nipples when I want. I belong to the no-bra gang.” These are some of the responses from women who don’t wear bras. Some even claim that it causes itching and rashes.
Some members of the younger generation, especially Gen Z, are attempting to change certain narratives while also trying to prove that their perspectives are correct. Traditionally, bras are considered an essential piece of clothing for women. Some organizations are taking measures to address the trend of not wearing bras among some girls and women. Recently, there was news about a university in Nigeria checking to ensure that students were wearing bras before entering the examination hall, a measure they claimed was to control the rise of indecent dressing in the institution. This incident elicited mixed reactions.
Should we be bothered about this trend?
A bra is not just a piece of clothing; it is of great benefit to breast health. Many factors are considered before designing this important garment.
A bra provides support and enhances the shape of the breasts and bustline. If you engage in sports or other physical activities, you will find it more comfortable to wear a suitable sports bra. It reduces excessive breast movement, which can be inconvenient and may hinder performance in sports competitions.
The bra provides good shape for the breasts when women wear certain outfits. Instead of the nipples protruding through the fabric, the entire breast is held firmly in a good position, offering a nice appearance. It lifts the breasts and can help prevent excessive sagging. A bra also offers support to the connective tissues and ligaments in the breasts by not putting much strain on them. Remember that the breasts contain fat and glands, which add considerable weight to them.
Bras are great for providing comfort and boosting self-confidence. They are made with materials like straps and underwires, which help to reduce strain on the neck, back, and shoulders. People with a more pronounced breast size will notice these benefits more when they’re not wearing a bra. When you are in the company of others, you will not feel uncomfortable with the movement of your breasts if you’re wearing a bra. Most women who choose to go braless tend to shy away from crowds, thereby reducing their self-confidence.
In most societies where indecent dressing is not encouraged, wearing a bra promotes modesty. It is also believed that some people are attracted to the sight of the sensitive parts of the opposite sex, which can promote immorality and unwarranted sexual advances. Wearing a bra under sheer or transparent fabric is highly recommended.
What To Do If You Don’t Like Wearing Bra
If you are among the group that do not like wearing a bra because of the discomfort you feel from wearing it, then try:
Look for a bra that does not contain underwires or tight straps. Most bras come with adjustable straps, so choose the type that will be suitable for you. Bras come in different sizes too; choosing one that is neither too tight nor too loose will give you the comfort you desire.
If you engage in physical activities, look for a sports bra that will provide comfort and support. There are many types of sports bras to choose from.
If you think you can’t be convinced to wear a bra, always consider the occasion you want to attend when deciding to go braless to avoid drawing unnecessary attention to yourself.
When you’re putting on a sheer or transparent fabric, consider wearing a bralette, corset, fitted singlet, or half-slip underneath your clothing.
We can all agree that every individual deserves the freedom to make some of their personal choices. At the same time, while expressing such freedom, we should consider societal norms and look for ways to ensure our personal choices are not seen as rebellious or deviant.
